December
Christmas Markets, Europe , December
It's that time of year again! An ideal opportunity to break into the festive spirit.
An abundance of delightful markets can be found across the continent, from Prague to the Belgian cities of Brussels and Ostend, from the Eurostar destination of Lille to the Austrian homes of Vienna and Innsbruck.
Perhaps most famous are those in Germany, from the oldest in Dresden, the pretty central square of Nuremberg, or the impressive city of Cologne, with its six separate markets attracting 2 million visitors a year.

Sphinx Festival, Egypt 1st - 5th December
Taking place at the Pyramids of Giza, Cairo's Sphinx Festival is a gathering point for artists, scholars and Egyptologists. Connecting art and science, the event is alive with dance shows, music and a variety of seminars devoted to themes ranging from Egyptian cosmology to sacred geometry.
January
Paris Randonnee du Rallye Tour Eiffel, Paris, 9th January
Hikers of all ages arrive each year for this event. Setting our from the Halle Georges Carpentier, walkers can choose from one of three circuits, each taking in the capital's famous sights.
A 14km hike takes in Montparnasse, Les Invalides, Le Champs Elysees, la Place de la Concorde and the Musee d'Orsay as well as the famous tower, while a longer 20km circuit extends towards Notre Dame, among other sights. A shorter 13km course, for the less energetic, includes a tram ride!
The event takes place whatever the weather, and costs just Euros1.80 to take part. Interested? You can enrol in advance or on the day.
Jasper in January, Canada
With 4,200 square miles of mountains and and lakes, the resort of Jasper is now a centre for the largest of the Canadian Rockies National Parks. Visit in January and be part of the two week snow festival - everything goes as long as it is fun - snow sculptures,Party in the Park, Family Fun Race, Mountain Triathlon, History Mystery Challenge - not to forget the winter sports!
February
Desert Classic, Dubai, 1st - 7th February
Many of the world's top ranked players will be present as this prestigious, six day golf tournament takes place at the Majilis, Emirates Golf Club.
Chinese New Year, New York, 14th February
Celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Tiger in this amazing city. Chinatown, on Manhattan's lower east side, comes alive with 10 days of festivities featuring parades with dragon and lion dancers and extravagant costumes
March
St Patrick's Day Parade, New York, 17th March
The city turns green along Fifth Avenue, from 44th to 86th streets, when the world-famous parade starts at 11am. Join the celebrations and soak up the atmosphere.
Los Angeles Marathon, 21st March
Take part or just enjoy the entertainment – this Marathon will offer something for everyone. Runners will start from Dodger Stadium, passing through Hollywood and Beverly Hills, before finishing at the beach. Bands and performers are traditionally present en route, all adding to the atmosphere.
