Going green

Some of the latest measures being taken in the Travel Industry
Gulf Air announces eco inititiatives

Gulf Air plans to reduce its annual CO2 emissions by around 33,000 tons, with a series of measures including more direct routes to destinations and a reduction in the amount of drinking water on flights.

The initiatives are being rolled out by the Gulf Air Conservation Committee, and include:

• A reduction in fuel consumption by flying a more direct route to certain destinations, resulting in the reduction of around 22,600 tons of CO2 emissions per year
• A 25 per cent reduction in the amount of potable water carried on board flights, saving around 1,800 tons of CO2 emissions
• The combining of the carrier’s two in-flight magazines, Gulf Life and On Air, printed on lower weight paper, and with fewer spares being carried on board, resulting in a reduction of around 600 tons of CO2 emissions per year
• Other fuel conservation measures including reduced contingency fuel, acceleration height management and flight spare kit weight reduction that will together save approximately 8300 tons of CO2 emissions

The carrier says the route shakeup will see over 20 new routes being added to its network in Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe, but up to 15 routes will also be cut, including those to Shanghai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

Jurys Inns set to be the UK’s greenest hotel group

The chain aims to achieve this by becoming the first in the UK to have all its 29 UK and Ireland city centre hotels awarded either a gold or silver award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS). The hotel group has received its 22nd Gold award from the GTBS and the remaining seven hotels to be assessed will be completed by mid January - with the aim to achieve gold in all of them.

No other large hotel chain has reached this level of environmental recognition from the GTBS - most hotel gorups receive only a handful of gold awards, The GTBS demands all its participants adhere to strict criteria covering energy, water efficiency, waste management and biodiversity.

The group is already seeing a recognizable return on its investment to become more green. In fact, the target is a cost saving of £1m over three years - savings which are then passed on to guests via low rates.

Across all its hotels, Jurys Inns has implemented a range of green programmes, from installing energy efficient light bulbs to monitoring each hotel's energy consumption using an external assessor. The group has also taken simple steps which have had a big effect - reducing the number of toilet flushes when cleaning bedrooms for instance - these have helped make annual savings of 79 millions litres of water.

Jurys Inns has 30 city centre hotels across the UK,Ireland and the Czech Republic.
