The sad and dramatic collapse of the airline Globespan just before Christmas has again highlighted the deficiency of the current arrangements for consumer protection.
Out of the 4,500 passengers stranded overseas only 1,100 were on packages and therefore protected under the ATOL scheme, of which Medway Travel is a member. The picture is even bleaker when looking at forward bookings with only 27,000 people covered under the ATOL scheme but 90,000 seat only passengers not benefitting from ATOL protection.
Any clients who booked flights with us together with accommodation or additional services, would have been covered under the scheme. Our ATOL licence provides our clients purchasing a flight or any package including flights, protection from the financial failure of their supplier either before or during their flight or package. The CAA holds a bond by all ATOL holders, which they use to pay for either a refund or to get any “stranded” travellers home.
In addition, for those clients whose travel is not covered by the terms of our ATOL, Medway Travel guarantees all the airline tickets we issue, against Airline Failure. This provides insurance cover should your chosen airline fail prior to your intended travel, or while you are away, allowing us to recoup the original cost on your behalf, and rebook with another supplier.
Sadly the fall of travel companies and airlines has been all too familiar news over the last few years. On the surface it may sometimes appear less expensive to book directly online - in reality, when such a failure occurs, it can prove disasterous when no ATOL bonding or air fare guarantee has been included with the travel arrangements.
By booking with us, we can assure that your arrangements will be safely covered.
