Horses are fantastic creatures with so much to offer all of us. Spending a day with your horses is more than just being outdoors. You are building a relationship with your horse. You are a team. You get a thrill when your horse comes up and meets you at the gate asking to come in and be ridden. You will learn your horses' favorite places to be scratched and loved. This can add another dimension to your vacation as you develop the skills to communicate your ideas to your horse. Here at the Rocking Z you will experience the thrill of being an effective leader and partner, a sensation that can truly be priceless.

Children's Programme

Teenagers have a wonderful time. Just like adults, teens have a wide variate of expectations on vacation. Expanding your horizon with hands on horse time learning the basics of what it is like to be a Cowboy and stretching your muscles in new physical challenges. Many have enjoyed trying their luck with evening card games, playing music and shooting pool. Still others may want to relax under a tree with a book after a great morning ride. Whether you want to be horseback 12 hours a day or take advantage of rugged ranch experiences teens and young adults have a great time.

They also welcome children of all ages. Children six and up get to spend much of the day learning to ride and play games on their horses. They get to hike trails above the cliffs for a great fun and guided exploration. There are always kittens to play with. The creek has many shallows as well as deep holes and a great afternoon can be spent playing there being in and out of the water, learning about bugs and plants. All of these activities are guided by a great young adult. The children feel like it is their idea without a schedule. In the late afternoon adults and kids can have a great time playing volleyball in the back yard.

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is superb on Little Prickly Pear Creek on the ranch or on the Missouri River. Many of their guests come just to fish. They have brown and rainbow trout. Little Prickly Pear Creek is a major spawning area for both kinds of trout. It is not unusual to catch a 20 inch Brown. Guided fishing can be made available. They have a fishing equipment available but you will be required to get a day, week, or season fishing license from any local fishing shop.

Floating the Missouri River

At least once a week they float the Missouri River for about 3 hours in the afternoon or they take a full day and enjoy a longer section of the river and the spectacular cliffs and wildlife. A full day in a canoe can be arranged. In June they can do a 18 mile float down the Dearborn River.

Bird Watching

For birding enthusiasts all seasons have highlights. The Rocking Z Ranch take care of your every need while you spend extended time observing the nearly 250 different species in the area. A highlight is the migration of Tundra Swans, Snow Geese, and Canadian Geese at Freezeout Lake. This lake is 50 miles away. You can see thousands of swans and geese as they migrate north, March and April, or migrate south, November and December. This is a spectacular site. The ranch will escort you individually or arrange for a naturalist for your group.

They live in an excellent area to view raptors. Bald and Golden Eagles are seen almost daily. There are also many hawks. They see and hear Sand Hill Cranes often. There are also blue herons. It is a rich area for small birds too from the water ouzles to the hummingbirds.

Killdeer are facinating. They nest on the ground and act wounded when their nest is neared. Whether songbirds or waterfowl are your interest, the Rocking Z will enhance your interest in Birding. A three to seven day stay will maximize your learning and enjoyment. Bring your camera and binoculars.

"Hi Mel,

Well I still can't really believe that I did it!

Everything went very smoothly, the ranch was absolutely wonderful. A very family orientated ranch with lots of support for the less well ridden and magnificent rides for those already experienced, which I was able to join in with after just a couple of days of expert tuition. The horses were all well feed and looked after and very well behaved. The accommodation was very good, plenty of room.

The food was all home cooked, fresh and delicious. The meals were taken with the family and rest of the guests so I didn't feel like a single traveller, in fact there were two other ladies travelling alone too.
All the connections worked well, I managed to get to an earlier flight from Chicago to Denver as I was ready with my bag.

I would certainly like to go back to the ranch, just need to save up!

Regards

Sue"

Arizona

Price Canyon Ranch

This is one of our most popular Arizona ranches, this property is located in the heart of the Chiricahua Mountains, in the southeast corner of the State and close to the Mexican border. A working cattle and guest ranch established in 1879, the hills are filled with history dating back to the fierce Apache days of the famous Geronimo and Cochise.

Horse Riding

Generally 2 rides per day, everyday except Sundays, when they have only the morning ride, to give the horses and the cowboys a much needed break. The trails range from grassy meadows to more challenging terrain. In lieu of a ride, they offer arena games, such as pole-bending, barrel racing, cattle sorting, team penning, etc. Learn "how to" from the real cowboys. They do not encourage nose to tail riding, unless the terrain dictates.

Lessons

Lessons are available for all ages and abilities. Lessons are $50 an hour, per person and must be arranged in advance.

Cattle Work

The Indian lore still exists in caves and the forests which whisper their secrets. Surrounded by over a half million acres of National Forest and Wilderness, with an elevation of a mile high, the temperatures are conducive to year round pleasure. Cattle drives happen every month (additional charge approx £38 - £44pp) and cattle works consisting of branding and weaning are scheduled throughout the year but usually early each month. Their guests enjoy a real western lifestyle experience and are welcome to participate in the day to day activities that take place at an authentic working cattle ranch.

Beautiful Texas longhorns graze in pastures that stretch over 32,000 acres. Mending fences, checking water lines and patrolling boundaries are part of the everyday horseback riding that takes place at the ranch. No need to lift a hand, unless your heart desires. Just enjoy the horse you are on and the spectacular scenery surrounding you. With three different topographies, that range from grassy meadows (perfect for loping and horse play) to the beautiful forests above that reach 9000 feet of Oak, Cypress, Pine and Douglas fir. Nose to tail riding is discouraged unless the terrain dictates.

There are 10 comfortable and private guest suites, each with its own sitting area, CD player and refrigerator for your convenience. Perfect size for a gathering of family, friends or small company retreat! They are surrounded by the 2.3 million acre National Forest. Because of their location they operate off the utility grid using solar and hydro power to supplement their propane generator for all electricity. Cell phones do not work at the ranch so the ranch phone is the only means of getting in contact.

The ranch is also located just 4 miles from Rifle Park where there is world class rock climbing. There is a golf course located 15 minutes from the ranch and they would be happy to set up tee times for anyone interested in playing.

Their winter programme is truly unique. Because they are in the National Forest, the road to the ranch is closed once the snow comes, usually in December. After this point guests must come the last two miles on snowmobiles. Their staff provides this pick up and drop off service. Once at the ranch, guests use their snowmobiles or rent to take advantage of the 30+ miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Veteran snowmobilers as well as first timers can enjoy these trails. The ranch also grooms trails for cross country skiing. Other activities enjoyed at this time of year are snow shoeing, sledding, skating, and just relaxing around the fire.
