Cattle Drive across Wyoming

Cattle Drive:

Their season starts in May with cattle drives from Wyoming to Montana. The ranch trail cows over the Old Sioux Trail stretching 50 miles through the wild horse range and into Montana’s beautiful “Big Sky Country”.

In the spring they trail 100-150 cows, each with their calf, each week. During their spring drives you will stay in an authentic cow camp, if the weather permits.

Their fall drives begin in mid October. They do not camp during these drives. Since the calves have been weaned earlier, they only trail cows on these fall drives. Don’t let this scare you away, these drives are as easily accomplished by beginners as well as experienced riders.

Ranch Weeks:

Ranch weeks start at the conclusion of the cattle drives and ends with the beginning of the fall cattle drives. A ranch week may include branding, vaccinating, roping, mini-veterinary needs, wrangling the horse cavvy, holding herds, salting, fencing, rotating pastures, bull gathering, weaning calves, pregnancy testing cows and heifers, weaning colts, working mare bands, occasional horse drives, and riding through the neighbours pastures looking for strays. Since this is a year round cow/calf, mare/colt operation, all of these things are done in the timing and season they are needed.

The bunkhouse has a semi-private bath facility . The Ranch house rooms have a semi-private bath across the hall. The ranch have moved the cabins into the Dryhead Canyon and will be adding private bathrooms during the 2006 seasonRanch

Transfer: Because of the terrain and remoteness of the Schively-Dryhead Ranch, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is required, if you choose to drive. Schively-Dryhead Ranch will pick up at the Billings, Montana International airport at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday of the week of your choice and return in the late afternoon (4:00 or 5:00 p.m.) on the following Saturday.

Japanese Gardens Tour

The origin of the Japanese garden lies in simple, gravel-covered forest clearings where the gods could manifest themselves. Over the centuries the gardens have evolved into an idealized reflection of the natural landscape through the careful use of stone and water features, trees, plants and moss. They are places of exquisite beauty, where the eye is led gently to perfectly framed views, often ‘borrowing’ a distant landscape as part of the picture being created. Trees and plants are carefully chosen for certain qualities of form, colour or texture, all of which combine to create an atmosphere of calm and contemplation. Autumn foliage and spring blossom, which generally commences in mid March, are particularly highly prized. Many of the most notable gardens are in and around Kyoto, the former capital of Japan, and you will have three full days exploring both public and private gardens here.  One of the best known is Kinkaku-ji, with the three-tiered Golden Pavilion at its heart.

Day 1

Depart on scheduled overnight flight from London Heathrow (regional flight connections available on request) to Kansai International Airport (Osaka).

Day 2

On arrival in Osaka in the morning you transfer by coach to Kyoto and the Royal Hotel. The hotel is centrally located with views over the city. All rooms have air-conditioning, private bathroom, TV, fridge, telephone and tea/coffee making facilities. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 3

Today you will have a full day tour Kyoto, beginning with a visit to Kinkakuji temple. The three-tiered Golden Pavilion, which was reconstructed in 1955, is the focus of this ‘pond-and-island’ garden. It exerts a unifying force on the expansive view of the broad Mirror Lake that spreads out beneath it, partly due to the skillful placement of crags and islands. A path behind leads through a leafy forest. You continue to Kiyomizu temple, built in 1633. Jutting out from the hillside on a wooden veranda it commands a fine view over the city. Our next visit is to Heian Shrine, a rare example of an extensive pond garden in the grounds of a Shinto shrine. There are actually four separate gardens, set around the temple building, and designed fundamentally for strolling. The gardens are designated as representative of Meiji era (1868-1912) garden design. You conclude today with a visit to the Kyoto Handicraft Centre, which offers handicraft demonstrations and tax-free shopping.

Day 4

You depart today on a full day excursion to Osaka. You will visit Osaka Castle, begun in 1586, which is noted for its magnificent donjon and huge stone walls. It contains many historical art objects and the grounds are laid out as a park. Later you will visit Kaiyukan Aquarium, one of the largest in the world. Sea-life from 15 different regions, mainly in the Pacific Ocean, is represented in a tour that takes us through a variety of re-created environments, from the Japanese forest to the bottom of the ocean. You return to Kyoto for the evening.

Day 5

Today you transfer to Nara, where you begin with a visit to Todaiji temple. The temple is famous for its ‘daibutsu’, the world’s largest bronze statue and the hall that houses it is claimed to be the world’s largest wooden structure. You continue to Nara Park, popularly known as ‘Deer Park’ as over a thousand tame deer roam free here. There are many historical relics located in and around this finely wooded area. To the west of Nara Park is the Kasuga Grand Shrine, one of Japan’s most important Shinto shrines. Lunch in a local restaurant is included today and we return to Kyoto for the evening.

Day 6

Today you are free to explore Kyoto at leisure. Alternatively, there is an optional excursion, by train to Hiroshima. This was the first city to experience the destruction of an atomic bomb in 1945 and the city is now symbolized by the Peace Memorial Park, which is included in our visit. In the Park are a museum, the Memorial Cenotaph, the Children’s Peace Monument and the Flame of Peace.

Day 7

You will have another full day in Kyoto today, visiting some outstanding gardens. Daisen-in temple is a dry-landscape garden of the Muromachi period, featuring some classic white gravel abstract forms and containing a famous boat-shaped rock. Saiho-ji temple is noted for its many species of mosses which grow around a large pond in the lower garden. From here a path leads up to a spectacular dry-landscape cascade. You continue with visits to the gardens at Ryogen-in and Zuiho-in and another private garden before returning to our hotel.

Day 8

You will visit the Kyoto Botanical Garden, set in a beautiful location with Mount Hiei and the Higashiyama Ridge to the east and the clear waters of the Kamogawa River to the west. Kyoto Botanical Garden, which opened in 1924, is one of Japan’s leading Botanical Gardens. The gardens have more than 120,000 plants on display and other features include a rose garden, two iris gardens, Japanese native plants and a bonsai collection. The beautiful cherry trees blossom in late March and April and can be seen in abundance in the cherry tree forest. Autumn reflects the autumn colours of the different varieties of trees including maples.

Day 9

You leave Kyoto today, taking the famous ‘Shinkansen’ or Bullet Train to Tokyo. On arrival in Japan’s capital you will be met by a coach and given an orientation tour of the city before transferring to our hotel. The Prince Park Tower Hotel is centrally located in the Akasaka district of the city and all rooms have full private facilities.

Day 10

You have a full day sightseeing in Tokyo today, including visits to the Eastern Imperial Palace Garden, where the royal family resides, Sensoji Temple and Nakamise shopping street. Later you take a cruise on the Sumida River from Asakusa to Hamarikyu. Here you visit the gardens where General Grant stayed with the emperor in 1895, now a popular place for relaxation.

Day 11

You depart today on a full day excursion to Hakone and Mount Fuji, which begins with a visit to Onshi Hakone Park, an area of forested mountains and deep ravines. We will enjoy a cruise on Lake Ashi, the principal attraction of Hakone, 723m above sea-level. The views are dominated by Mount Fuji, the highest peak in Japan at 3776m and instantly recognizable. You will have a further photo stop at Mount Fuji before returning to Tokyo.

Day 12

Today you will have a full day excursion in Tokyo which includes visits to Happo-en garden and another private garden.

Day 13

You depart by coach for a full day excursion to the historic town Kamakura, to the south of Tokyo. The town is flanked by wooded mountains on three sides and Sugami Bay to the south. Here you visit the Great Buddha, the second largest after the one in Nara, and Hase Kannon Temple. Said to have been constructed in 736, the temple houses an eleven-headed gilt statue of Kannon, Goddess of Mercy, and a gigantic temple bell. You continue to the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, one of the biggest attractions in Kamakuru, its approaches flanked by azaleas and cherry trees. You conclude with a farewell dinner at a local restaurant which will feature Japanese specialities.

Galapagos Diving and more

This unique archipelago comprises nineteen main islands and several small islands. Extreme depths, down to 3,000 metres off the western islands, and a complex system of currents combine to nourish a stunning abundance of marine species.

The radiant fish and bizarre animals populating the islands make it one of the great dive destinations; swept by the cold waters of Antarctica and the warm currents from the tropical Pacific, the Galapagos colourful marine-life embodies an unusual mixture of species. Here, penguins swim with tropical fish and iguanas feed underwater. The marine animals exhibit the same bold curiosity and lack of fear that characterises the terrestrial wildlife.  There is no better way to explore the Galapagos Islands than on board a boat and for a diver no better way than a liveaboard.

Orangutans and more in Borneo

An adventure in Sarawak and Sabah - Kinabalu, SE Asia's highest peak - Mulu and the 'Headhunters Trail' - Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. 10 nights hotels and lodges, 2 nights camping, 1 night longhouse, 6 days MODERATE trekking, 7 days touring and sightseeing, max. altitude - 4101m. Some meals not included.

This great adventure starts out with a visit to the Mulu National Park, deep within the rainforest of north-eastern Sarawak.

Trekking on jungle trails and travelling by longboat on the many rivers, you will explore some of the world's largest caves and climb above the forest canopy to a spectacular viewpoint amongst soaring limestone pinnacles. You then trek northwards on the 'Headhunters Trail,' stopping off at the villages and longhouses of the Iban people.

From Kota Kinabalu in the adjacent state of Sabah, a short flight takes you to Sandakan, where you will visit the Orangutan sanctuary at Sepilok and enjoy 2 nights at a jungle lodge on the Kinabatang River in an area rich in wildlife. Returning via the hot springs at Poring to the foot of Kinabalu (4101m./13450ft), you make a 2-day ascent of this challenging peak whose bare upper slopes command memorable views across the South China Sea to the Philippines. This is Borneo at its best!

The first trekking element on this trip is the 4-day exploration of the Gunung Mulu National Park. Although this is at low level, there is one tough day, as you climb to the viewpoint for the Mulu Pinnacles. You will also need to be prepared for hot conditions and for at times testing underfoot conditions. You will be mostly walking on tracks and trails between villages. There will be rutted, muddy roads and slippery hunters tracks through the forest. The slippery and sometimes sharp limestone rock encountered on the ascent to the Mulu Pinnacles is particularly testing. There are also river crossings, some of them on tree trunk bridges.

There is a couple of hours walking on the first day at Mulu, 2 to 3 hours on the second, 6 to 7 hours on the third and 4 to 5 hours on the final day in this area. Two days are set aside for the ascent of Mount Kinabalu. This is a tough undertaking and involves approximately 2200 metres of ascent and descent via the same route. The path is well maintained in places and has countless steps. It can be slippery low down in the forest and after rain. High up on the route, there are sections of bare rock slabs, with some fixed rope handrails. The route is never very steep or exposed.

Overall, this trip is graded at the upper end of a MODERATE grade on account of the remote trekking and the quite tough ascent of Kinabalu.

Bear Trail in Lapland

The Bear Trail may be the most well known long-distance hiking trail in the whole of Scandinavia. It is situated in Finnish Lapland in the beautifully tranquil Oulanka National Park, which merges with the Russian Paanajarvi National Park to the east.  Unique rock formations and canyons have been eroded by the powerful Oulankajoki River, which you often follow during the walk. The park attracts many photographers, birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts keen to spot brown bear, elk and numerous migrating birds.

The trail is well maintained and runs on boardwalks over extensive aapa mires, across surprisingly high hills (for Finland!), past surging rapids, along rugged riverbanks and through silent pine forests. Burgeoning bushes replete with juicy berries and delicate cloudberry flowers line the riverbanks and there will be plenty of opportunities to take refreshing dips in the lakes after your nightly sauna.

Charmingly simple log cabins hidden amongst the trees are your home each night and with daily luggage transfers you can walk with a spring in your step through this very unassuming and bewitching area. You will hike along the 60 most beautiful kilometres of this trail...

Days 1 and 2. Outbound to Lapland
Fly to Helsinki and send time exploring the delights this very friendly and elegant city has to offer. The following morning fly on to Kuusamo in the south-eastern corner of Finnish Lapland, where you will meet your guide.

Days 3 and 4. Kiutakongas Canyon
The trail begins through forest past the swirling rapids of Taivalkongas and across a hanging bridge to your overnight cabin. Enjoy the first of many traditional saunas before visiting the Oulanka nature centre. Hike to the famous 14km long canyon of Kiutakongas, a very special place created by the ice age where water thunders down between its dolomite walls. Reminders of the first settlers can still be found here and you follow the river through remote wilderness to a boat crossing which brings you to your next lodge - and sauna of course.

Day 5. White Water Viewing
The next section is very peaceful and beautiful with sandy beaches and riverside trails. Leaving the Oulankajoki behind, you stride out over rolling hills and marshlands, home to many interesting lichen, wild flowers and birds until reaching the shores of the Kitkajoki. This ferocious river offers the best white water rafting in Finland and you will undoubtedly walk alongside boats full of squealing paddlers as they are faced by the famous Myllykoski rapids. Enjoy a picnic lunch near the old mill here, safely on dry land!

Days 6 and 7. Little Bear Trail and a Tent Sauna!
You now follow the 'Little Bear Trail' across hanging bridges and up and down wooden staircases winding their way through the undergrowth. Arrive at the most photographed waterfall in Finland, the rugged Jyrava Falls, with sweeping views out over the river, its islands and far shores. Continue through typical rural farmland with a quick side trip to the scenic Joenniskan Rocks. Tonight you will enjoy a very unique experience - dinner in a kota restaurant followed by a Finnish tent sauna!

Day 8. Mountains and Pistes
Climbing up through the Valtavaara Nature Reserve you are rewarded with spectacular views of the trail - both past and future. You finally emerge at the pistes at Ruka, a popular winter ski resort and with a last 'downhill run' you finish back in 'civilisation'.

Day 9. Homeward
Transfer to Kuusamo and fly back to the UK.

Exploring the Heart of Cambodia

Only recently has it been permitted (and safe) to explore Cambodia beyond Phnom Penh and Angkor. Travelling by land, sea and river, you will take an in-depth look at some of these newly opened lands: from French colonial towns and remote villages to relaxing on the pristine beaches of the Andaman Sea and visiting some of the fascinating Khmer temples scattered throughout Cambodia.

After sightseeing in Phnom Penh, you will south to the charming riverside town of Kampot where you will take a journey into the surrounding picturesque countryside in a peculiar form of local transport based on the tractor known as a 'remorque'. Travelling back to Phnom Penh, you continue your adventure and head for Kratie, home to some of the last Irrawady freshwater dolphins in Southeast Asia. Sightings are common and you will spend some time here to enjoy this unique opportunity. You will stop at Kompong Cham for a chance to explore by bicycles, then drive on to Kompong Thom passing many remote villages along the way. You will also visit the ancient Chenla capital of Sambor Prei Kuk: over a hundred temples dedicated to Shiva lie hidden in the jungle, at this tranquil and rarely visited 7th century site.

Your tour would not be complete without a visit to the breathtaking temples of the Angkorian Kings. Constructed over a period of some 600 years, hundreds are scattered through a vast area of the Cambodian jungle. Your exploration includes the main highlights - Angkor Wat, Ta Phrom and Angkor Thom, as well as a number of lesser known and newly opened ones, such as Banteay Srei. Finally you fly back to Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh.

Travelling with a tour leader and using local guides your group will consist of between 12 to 16 travellers. Accommodation is based upon bed and breakfast as you are encouraged to reduce your carbon footprint by using local restaurants and produce. This tour is operated in conjunction with Explore who have been awarded a three star for responsible tourism.

Transfer by speedboat to Nosy Be with its idyllic beaches, coral reefs and wonderful tropical ambiance. En route stop at the islands of Nosy Kombo, with Black Lemurs and friendly villagers, and Nosy Tanikely, to snorkel in the marine reserve an incredible variety of marine-life.

Day 8. Nosy Be

Nosy Be is covered with luxuriant vegetation, a paradise of perfumed plants such as ylang-ylang, vanilla, lemongrass and geranium. Nosy Be has been catering for tourists for a long time and there are several hotels on the island; we suggest overnighting at either the L'Ylang Ylang or Vanilla Hotel.

Days 9 to 13. Liveaboard

Join Oceane's Dream on their well-equipped catamarans, sailing the unexplored reefs and small, often uninhabited islands that surround Nosy Be. Previously unfrequented by divers these rich waters offer easy and spectacular dives; along drop-offs, in caves or over the coral heads found in shallow water. Whilst pristine reefs, unaffected as yet by global warming, are a photographer's dream. Large numbers of reef fish as well as Barracuda, Groupers, Yellow Tuna, Eagle, Sting, and Manta Rays and Whale Sharks are waiting to be discovered, while Humpback Whales migrate past the islands from July to October. With only four double cabins, you will practically have the reef to yourself. These comfortable, fully equipped catamarans offer a relaxing mix of sailing and diving, with time to explore some of those deserted beaches.

Day 14. Nosy Be

Return to Nosy Be, where you will overnight at the L'Ylang Ylang or Vanila Hotel.

Day 15. Homeward

Depart Nosy Be for Tana and catch your onward connection to the UK.

Day 16. Arrive home.
