Lapland Multi Activity
Due to an increase in demand for winter breaks that offer more than just the usual activity of skiing, we have established an extensive programme of snowy school trips across the winter wilderness of Lapland.
Our holidays offer pupils and teachers a wide range of exhilarating experiences, including snowmobiling, dog sledding, searching for the Northern Lights, ice fishing, snowshoeing, visiting snow castles and ice hotels, and of course, a visit to Father Christmas.
Our winter activity school trips are available from late November to early April, and the most popular destinations are in the north of Finland, Norway and Sweden. For many, a winter adventure holiday is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as because of that, we take great care in ensuring that the trips we offer are perfectly tailored to the wishes and needs of our customers.
We can provide you with a description of the wide range of activities and experiences that are available in your chosen destination, and you can then 'pick and mix' those that you specifically wish to enjoy, and let us create a personalised trip itinerary for your school or college.
Below, you will find an example itinerary of a recent school trip to Nellim...
About Nellim
The words 'genuine' and 'unspoilt' are used all too freely to describe travel destinations. In Nellim's case they are wholly appropriate.
You will this tiny "one street" town in the far North-East corner of Finnish Lapland on the shores of Lake Inari and just a shortdistance from the Russian Border. The terrain here is hillier and more rugged than in other parts of Finland and the spectacular winter scenery is all the more dramatic for that.
And, to add to the magic, this far north there is an excellent chance of seeing the Northern Lights.
There's so much here that is different. For example, if you walk close to the Finland/Russian border fence then motion-sensitive cameras follow your movements. It's spooky and exciting at the same time!
Day One
Fly from London Heathrow or Manchester (via Helsinki) to Ivalo (The most northerly airport in Finland)
Meet and greet at Ivalo and transfer by coach to Hotel Nellim on Lake Inari (approx 45mins).
Accommodation at Hotel Nellim in en-suite hotel bedrooms or apartments (we use extra beds to make 3 or 4 pupils per room)
The Nellim Wilderness Hotel is situated close to the shores of Lake Inari and just 1okm from the Russian border. Apart from being a Northern Lights hotspot, it is surrounded by a vast winter wilderness. The hotel is run by a Lappish couple called Jouko and Mari with help from various relatives and expert wilderness guides. There is nowhere more genuinely Lappish than Nellim.
Provision of cold weather thermal clothing which you will keep for the duration of your stay.
Full board – breakfast, lunch and dinner daily
Day Two
Snowshoe trek including a picnic lunch around an open fire (approx 3 hours)
Try walking in deep snow and you’ll find yourself waist deep and struggling to get out. However, snowshoes are designed to make life a little easier and are a great way to travel silently through the forest or across lakes. Keep and eye out for animal tracks.
Day Three
AM: Cross-Country Ski School (approx 2 hours)
Cross-country skiing is a religion in Finland with thousands and thousands of kilometers of trails crisscrossing the north of the country. It’s far easier than downhill skiing to master and provides both great fun and exercise.
PM: Visit to a Reindeer Farm (approx 1 hour)
Reindeer are integral to the Sami way of life and have been key to their survival in the hard Arctic environment for centuries. You’ll visit a local reindeer farm, meet the herder, learn about the importance of reindeer to the Sami way of life and meet the reindeer too.
Day Four
Snow Fun (sledging, toboggans, ice fishing, lasso practice etc – approx 2 to 3 hours)
Exactly what it says on the tin, general messing around in the snow.
Evening Snowshoe Search for the Northern Lights (2 hours)
Nellim is a real Northern lights hotspot. With vast, light pollution free skies, your chances of seeing a spectacular aurora on a cloudless night are very strong. 2012 is expected to see increased Auroral activity as the sun nears the peak of its 11 year solar activity cycle. Not to be missed!
Day Five
Husky Safari – visit the husky farm, learn about the huskies from the owners, pet the dogs and do a short 5km safari (approx 30 mins).
Day Six
Arctic Skills – Fire making and cooking on an open fire, igloo building, orientation
Life here in the Arctic can be tough and it’s no surprise that survival skills are a vital part of every outdoors person’s education. Today we go all Ray Mears on you and also provide an option to sleep overnight in an igloo.
Farewell dinner in a traditional Lappish Kota
The perfect setting for a farewell party. You’ll gather round the fire for dinner in a traditional wooden kota.
Day Seven
Return airport transfers
Fly Ivalo to London or Manchester (via Helsinki)
